Birdcraft

In 2015 SGC submitted and won a Founders Fund runner-up award of $7,500.00 that helped facilitate and restore habitat gardens, creating a “Living Classroom” at The Connecticut Audubon Society Birdcraft Museum in Fairfield, CT. The result is a five native Habitat Gardens, once a woodland monoculture overrun with invasive plants, now transformed to better nourish over 120 bird species. Educational signage and free mobile tours create a “Living Classroom” by teaching thousands of residents and school children the importance of habitat biodiversity.

Sasqua continues to maintain the habitat gardens today. The Club’s mission is to improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. The Club provided funding, horticultural expertise and countless hours of labor to establish and improve Birdcraft’s habitat gardens. A variety of signs were provided through the 2015 Founders Fund award from GCA. Installation began in 2016 and continues today.

Mabel’s original plan included a waterfall feature at the main entrance of the museum. In the winter of 2015-2016 with donations from Sasqua GC, Fairfield GC and CT Audubon Society, the challenge was met to build and install a wonderful, natural looking two level waterfall that looks as if it is spring fed. In addition the Spaght Family mill stone now stands as the center of the terrace fountain.
